What are Ambulatory Surgery Centers?
Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) are medical clinics which focus on same-day surgical procedures. They are not for emergency services. The word “ambulatory” in Latin is known as “ambulare”, which means “to walk.” Patients treated in these surgical centers needs no hospitalization and can go home post procedure. Ambulatory surgical centers are also known as Surgicenters.
ASCs are specialist medical institutions that provide outpatient surgical services.Prior to the advent of ambulatory surgery centers, nearly all surgical procedures were conducted in hospital settings. While hospitals can be relied on to provide quality treatment, patients seeking elective surgery, face a number of challenges including scheduling delays and restricted operating room availability.
ASCs have been a popular alternative to inpatient hospital settings in recent decades due to their flexible scheduling options, calmer and more pleasant environs, and cheaper prices. Ambulatory surgery centers can be found either within a hospital or as a separate satellite facility. This could be a separate entity or a branch of the local hospital. Some operations may be carried out straight in the office of the healthcare professional.
What Types of Operations Are Performed in ASC’s?
Ambulatory surgical centers specialize in operations that do not require an overnight hospital stay but are more complex than what an urgent care clinic can provide. The following are some of the most common operations performed in ASCs:
- LASIK, cataract removal, and glaucoma therapy are examples of ophthalmology operations.
- Tonsil removal, sinus surgery, and the removal of benign lesions are examples of ENT operations.
- Minor fracture repairs, minor joint surgery, and injections are examples of Orthopaedic operations.
- Treatments in gastroenterology include colonoscopies, endoscopies, and polyp removal.
- Procedures involving the veins, such as varicose vein therapy and pacemaker battery replacement.
Vasectomy, kidney stone treatment, and prostate biopsies are examples of urology/proctology operations.
The medical history of the patient, the opinion of the surgeon and the opinion of anesthesiologist, are significant in evaluating whether the treatment should be conducted as an outpatient or as an inpatient.
